With CES going on as I type, we’re finally hearing first hand reports of what BlackBerry’s PlayBook is like to use. One of the lucky people to spend time with the iPad competitor is Gizmodo’s Matt Buchanan – but he’s hit upon an intriguing problem that I’ve not yet seen mentioned. The PlayBook doesn’t have native email and calendar apps.
From Buchanan’s post:
The question is: Who, besides BlackBerry users, is going to want to buy it? The core email and calendar apps are completely tethered to a BlackBerry. Without your BlackBerry, there is no native email or calendar app—just access through the (admittedly good) web browser. But that’s gonna turn off a lot of people.
Now it remains to be seen whether this is just an oversight while the full OS and suite of apps is in development or if this is indeed the finished article.
If it is staying as is though, Buchanan has a point: who WILL want a tablet without basic email or a calendar?
Those HTML5 apps had better get good quick!
