RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie gave in some more details on the smartphone giant’s upcoming tablet at Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (or GITEX) this week, and one in particular caught everyone’s eye.

Ever since RIM announced it was entering into the tablet market (is it really a market when there’s only one real device out there?) the lack of any mention of battery life was a concern. Factor in the other hardware specs which included a dual core 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM, power management and battery size soon becomes an important part of the equation.

From the specs announced via slide-show at GITEX though, it appears RIM has already thought of such matters. When it launches next year, the Research in Motion PlayBook will sport a whopping 5300mAh battery – that’s equivalent to a good laptop battery. With that power packed behind a 7″ screen this thing should certainly give the iPad a run for the endurance crown.

Also confirmed at the event – PlayBook will come in three different capacities just like the iPad – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
