Best Buy Expecting Sprint iPhone 5 Release in First Week of October

Best Buy iPhone 5 release date

According to many recent reports, including BGR who discovered an internal memo, the rumored iPhone 5 may be coming to Sprint sooner than expected. With Apple’s recent transition to Verizon, groundwork for the move to Sprint has been laid. Now, the day that many Sprint customers have been waiting for is almost here.

Thanks to a leaked document from a Best Buy source, we have discovered that Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores are anticipating taking preorders for the iPhone 5 starting in the first week of October. What’s a tad bit more interesting, however, is the mention (and further anticipation) that Sprint will be carrying the iPhone 5 at launch.

Best Buy also mentioned that the date of the iPhone 5 release on Sprint may be changed. Possibly, because of Apple’s constantly changing release dates for new iPhone hardware. Without a stable release and formal introduction by Apple, the public will not be allowed any information on what carriers that it will be available on.

The move to Sprint is a rather easy one for Apple by introducing a CDMA version of its popular iPhone 4 in order to accommodate Verizon’s networks. ThisIsMyNext also confirmed that Best Buy is expecting a new “Apple Fixture Installation” on Friday, October 21st.

To be clear, this isn’t a run-of-the-mill installation for the big box — our tipster tells us that the request that a manager be on-hand at 6AM is out of the ordinary (they usually show up at 7AM for inventory), and that a similar arrangement was scheduled for the iPhone 4 launch.

This same device will likely be tweaked in order to take on Sprint as well. Apple could also introduce an integrated GSM and CDMA model, simplifying the number of devices and software updates that they would have to release.

Best Buy did not comment on this internal memo and is likely keeping it under wraps until Apple gives them the go ahead. Apple is expected to release the iPhone 5 this October, alongside the public release of iOS 5. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted.
