Back in Time Review: There is nothing quite like a large coffee table book brought to popularity by the coffee table books about coffee tables introduced by Kramer in 1994 episode of Seinfeld. These books are big, glossy, encyclopedia like books full of gorgeous pictures and information and Back in Time is the iPad equivalent of this.
Back in Time condenses over 13 billion years of history into a gorgeous, informative interactive experience putting the full history of the world into a 24 analog clock for you to move through.
The App Starts with the Big Bang and you can scroll simply through all of the major events in the worlds history, from the creation of the milky way and the origins of life, through to the pyramids of Egypt, the Roman Empire and the journey into space along with all of the steps in-between.
Simply scrolling through these events is great especially if you have children as they can start great conversations and that’s exactly what I did with my 8 year old daughter. The great thing about these conversations and the inevitable questions that come from them is the fact that where I didn’t know the answer I was able to tap on the specific moment in history and delve into more detail.
This additional information takes the form of text, photographs, video’s, audio and an even more detailed time line of the specific event. While the text doesn’t go into great detail it certainly provides enough information to whet the appetite and get either yourself, or younger children engaged, involved and interested in a whole number of subjects.
The information is all provided to a backdrop of soothing music which sets the perfect relaxed atmosphere for both entertainment and education. And as all the information is already in the application you don’t have to wait for pictures to download or videos to buffer.
It would be nice to be able to bookmark your place to return too, however the app is so easy to navigate it’s not that difficult to find your way back.
