Assault [rating: 1/5]

Games with Tanks in various forms have been popular across all platforms for many years and the latest to try to get into the hearts and minds of armchair generals is Assault from Starwind Games who have already released a variety of shooting games for the iPhone.

Assault is a top down shooter where you have to maneuver your tank through each level defeating the other tanks as you do. Each of the levels is divided by a range of obstacles which can also be shot at to enable you to make your way through.

The best description of the graphics is BASIC, in the sense of the early programming language rather than the simplicity of them, although saying that both descriptions are appropriate in this case. In fact when playing this game on an iPhone 4 I’m sure I could hear it cry either through shame or embarrassment!

There are 4 planets to make your way through and each of them contain 9 levels for you to complete. Moving your tank is done via a virtual d-pad in the bottom right corner of the screen and as you would expect with a tank it can only move horizontally or vertically.

Poor graphics can usually be compensated for by good game play and controls, unfortunately the controls are not ideal and it’s often too easy to slip off of the d-pad and leave your tank stranded in no-mans land open to easy attack from the enemy tanks that patrol the levels.

The shooting button is on the bottom left of the screen and it can be used to shoot both the opposing tanks and the walls that block you path. And while you only start with a single weapon as you progress through the levels you get to power up your weapons to bigger and more powerful options which certainly makes things more interesting.

As you get better weapons though the enemies also get bigger and better too so it’s not plain sailing by any degree and more often than not I found that multiple attempts were required to clear the levels.

If you can ignore the poor graphics and frustrating controls the game does become quite an interesting challenge and the sound of an enemy tank exploding never disappoints.

However even at 99 cents the game is not something that you’ll find yourself eager to return to and will quickly become forgettable. If you have money to burn then give Assault a try, otherwise keep your money safe for a rainy day.

Pros

  • You can blow up tanks!

Cons

  • Poor graphics
  • Frustrating controls
  • Ultimately laking in enjoyment
