On Monday, Apple quietly updated the Maps application in Japan, releasing a number of bug fixes and enhancements to the app. Apple was expected to release these fixes in early February with iOS 6.1.1, however, released a number of iOS updates addressing Passcode lock bugs and iPhone 4S carrier issues.

Japanese site, Macotakara first noted the update, which shows that a number of the issues are solved through the server and did not require a change to the operating system. With iOS 6.1.1, which was later released to developers as iOS 6.1.3, Apple compiled a list of fixes in the release notes including improved pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation and other enhancements. iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 includes the following improvements to Maps for Japan:

– Improved pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation
– Optimized directions to more strongly prefer highways over narrower roads
– Now indicates upcoming toll roads during turn-by-turn navigation
– Added labels for junctions, interchanges, on-ramps, off-ramps, and intersections
– Added indicators for transit station buildings, subway lines, and traffic lights
– Updated freeway color to green
– Updated icons for some location categories including fire stations, hospitals, and post offices Added 3D buildings including Tokyo Station, Japan Imperial Palace, and Tokyo Tower
