Apple Releases 5.1 Update for Apple TV, Adds Photo Stream Support

AppleTV 5-1 update

AppleTV 5-1 update

Following the release of the new iPhone 5, iOS 6, and OS X 10.8.2 update, Apple has now updated the Apple TV software to version 5.1 to add new features to the 2nd and 3rd generations of the device. One of the most notable feature is Shared Photo Streams, which is shipping in iOS 6 with the iPhone 5 and was recently added to the iPhone 4S with the latest update.

With the update, the Apple TV will now be able to share audio to AirPlay-enabled speakers as well as other Apple TVs and AirPort Express, play iTunes Movie Trailers, display screen savers, and give users the option to arrange icons similar to iOS. The full list of features include:

Shared Photo Streams – Accept invitations for Shared Photo Streams, browse photos and comments, and receive notifications of new content.

AirPlay – Send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs). Also includes the ability to require an onscreen code to use AirPlay with your Apple TV.

iTunes account switching – Save multiple iTunes accounts and switch quickly between them.

Trailers – Search movie trailers. In the United States, see show times for local theaters.

Screen savers – New Cascade, Shrinking Tiles, and Sliding Panels screen savers.

Main menu – Reorder icons on the second page by holding down the select button on the remote.

Subtitles
– SDH support for the deaf and hard-of-hearing as well as improvements to viewing and selecting subtitles.

Network configuration – Support for setting up advanced network options using configuration profiles. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5437 for more information.

Stability and performance – Includes general performance and stability improvements.

This update for Apple TV has come after the last update that was released this past June, and brings a number of new features to the device. Users can download the update the same way one can update on iOS, Settings > General > Software Update. With this latest update, Apple’s iOS products, Macs, and Apple TV can now share media across devices, pushing the company’s focus on simplicity and ease of use.
