Apple Posts Job Listing

Over the past several weeks, rumors have suggested that Apple is looking to include faster 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi connectivity in its future Macs. Now, it appears that Apple is, in fact, looking to include the new Wi-Fi technology in its Macs and perhaps even iOS devices in the next few years. Apple has posted a job listing for 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi engineers.

The official job title is listed as “System Test Engineer” and is located at Apple’s main campus in Cupertino, California. Apple mentions in the listing that the job requires “technical knowledge” about Wi-Fi, including the newer 802.11ac, which is considered to be the “future” of the technology.

The current standard is 802.11n Wi-Fi, which is included in all of Apple’s current Macs and iOS devices. However, the next generation of Macs are slated to get the new 802.11ac as standard. While it hasn’t been rumored, it is also likely that it will also makes it way to iOS devices, particularly because of the new devices rely heavily on wireless connectivity to access many services such as Apple’s AirPlay, WiFi sync, and content downloads from iTunes and Netflix.

Unlike the 802.11n technology, the newer 802.11ac, also called “5G Wi-Fi” allows up to 1.3Gbps data transfers with just three-antennas. The same three antennas only gets a data transfer speed of 450Mpbs on the 802.11n standard, something that can be achieved with only one antenna on the newer Wi-Fi technology.

Apple continues to stay up to date with Wi-Fi technology on its devices, having included the current N technology as early as 2006, several years before it became the standard in the market.
