First iPad Reviews

The first batch of iPad reviews are in the wild and the likes of Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) are tweeting unpacking videos, and images of iPad screens bulging with apps.

Hard to explain the awesomeness of Smule’s Magic Piano app (they gave us Ocarina for iPhone): amazing.

Walt Mossberg [Wall Street Journal] had this to say:

After spending hours and hours with it, I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades.

He claims he got over 11 hours of life out of the battery.

David Pogue [New York Times] wrote two reviews. One from a tech writers perspective, and another from the consumers perspective. In the first he was a little scathing, and the second quite gushing!

Take 1 :

The bottom line is that you can get a laptop for much less money — with a full keyboard, DVD drive, U.S.B. jacks, camera-card slot, camera, the works. Besides: If you’ve already got a laptop and a smartphone, who’s going to carry around a third machine?

Take 2 :

The iPad is so fast and light, the multitouch screen so bright and responsive, the software so easy to navigate, that it really does qualify as a new category of gadget. Some have suggested that it might make a good goof-proof computer for technophobes, the aged and the young; they’re absolutely right.

Tim Gideon [PCMag] thought the iPad simply made sense :

When you combine basic-but-essential work tools with iWork, an improved browser, e-mail, iPod, and photo applications, a well-executed e-Book platform with iBooks, and throw in thousands of downloadable apps and games, and package it all in a gorgeous, slim slate with a beautiful 9.7-inch touch screen, you have yourself a winner.

All reviews noted the lack of Flash and multitasking. But then we’ve heard these moans before. But overall most reviews were very positive.

It seems that my guess that the majority of early iPad loans from Apple were indeed to journalists was correct. And it seems that they have had their moratorium on reporting lifted this moorning as the Blog-O-Sphere is exploding with tweets, app images, and reviews about the iPad.

Steven Fry even has accessories that are not avaialbe to the general public yet. Such as the Keyboard Dock and Carry Case. Lucky guy.

Have you seen any interesting tweets or reviews about the iPad that we haven’t? Any negative ones?
