Apple hires App Store Game Editorial Chief

Apple has shown that it is taking games more and more seriously over the last few months. This is another move in that direction.

Matt Casamassina, previously the ‘editor-at-large’ over at IGN has been hired by Apple as their App Store Game Editor in Chief.

Matt explains what this means on his personal weblog :

In a nutshell, I will be leading the charge for games on the App Store, he wrote, so whether you browse through iTunes, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, the games content you see will be handpicked and organised by me and my team.

Before being ‘editor-at-large’ Matt was best known for his role as a key figure in the part of IGN that was dedicated to Nintendo platforms. This was because he was hired when his website N64.com was purchased by IGN.

Let’s hope the App Store doesn’t turn into a Mario fest! Only kidding!

It will be interesting, however, to see how his role inside Apple affects things like the ‘New and Noteworthy’ and ‘Staff Favorites’ sections. And if he is able to come up with any new and interesting ways of helping some of the less prominent games getting noticed alongside those big publishers’ titles.

Do you think an ‘App Store Game Editorial Chief’ is what the App Store needs? Let us know in the comments.
