Apple’s iPhone 4S was launched on October 14 in the US and during the announcement event the company claimed that this would be their fastest international rollout. iPhone 4S is expected to be available in all major markets internationally by the end of 2011.
Earlier today Airtel, India’s largest network provider, sent out emails to its “platinum customers” to register their iPhone 4S. Apple has not announced any official date for the launch in India as yet. The email Airtel is sending to its customers doesn’t mention any launch date as it just says “coming soon”.
We are expecting an announcement from Apple on Tuesday as the Cupertino based company could announce the launch date for the next set of countries. Apple began selling the iPhone 4S in Hong Kong, South Korea and 13 additional countries on November 11 and it will be available in more than 70 countries by the end of the year.
Pricing in India is expected to remain the same as iPhone 4. iPhone 4S 16GB at Rs. 35,500, 32GB at Rs. 41,900, 64 GB at 47,900. iPhone 4 will only be available in 8GB and could be priced at around Rs. 30,000 and iPhone 3GS is expected to sell at Rs. 20,900.
It’s interesting to note that Airtel’s website doesn’t highlight Siri as a new feature of the iPhone 4S. This is probably due to the fact that Apple has not added support for the Indian accent as yet. However, Siri is expected to work just fine even with default setting of US or UK English. The video below clearly shows that Siri understands Indian accent very well.
iPhone 4S features 8 megapixel camera with advanced optics, dual-core A5 chip, 1080p HD video recording with video stabilization, improved call quality, supports HSPA+ and ships with iOS 5. With the introduction of iCloud users would no longer need to sync their iPhone with a computer or connect to iTunes to activate the phone. This will certainly help Apple sell more iPhones in India as most customers expect their phones to work out of the box without requiring to connect their device to a computer.
According to the rumor mill iPhone 4S will be available in India on November 25 which is a Friday, the usual day for any major product launch from Apple. Faster international rollouts for the company will help gain more market share since customers in India have deferred their purchase in the past due to the device being launched more than 6-10 months after US launch.
