7-Inch iPad similar to the iPhone 4 now a ‘finished product’ [Rumor]

Filed firmly in the ‘rumors that just won’t go away’ category, Chinese rumor site Shanzai.com claims that the 7 inch iPad is real. They even go so far as to say the iPad’s baby brother is in fact a ‘finished product’.

Rumors of a smaller iPad-like device have been doing the rounds for a while now, but this one differs in the way Shanzai.com claim the hardware may be more similar to the iPhone 4 than Apple’s magical and revolutionary (I couldn’t resist) tablet.

Interesting quote time:

Yes there will be a 7” tablet, yes it’s well underway in terms of product development and in fact it’s a finished product. Yes 5 plus different designs have been floating around to help Apple protect itself from people discovering its next product look and feel but… the final design will in fact bear more resemblance to the iPhone 4 stylings than the original iPad design.

According to the quote Apple has been working on 5 separate designs for the mythical 7 inch tablet – apparently to stop its competitors. You have to admit, this DOES sound like Apple!

For me, I just don’t see a need for a smaller iPad, or even a larger iPod touch. We all agreed that around 10 inch seemed to work well at launch and I don’t see anything changing.

Something else to keep in mind. Apple doesn’t release products unless there is a real marker for it. The iPad arrived at a time to fill the void between a notebook and an iPod touch. Is there a market for something between an iPad and an iPod touch?

I’m not convinced. What do you think?

Why wouldn’t Apple diversify the iPad product line with a 7in model?
Look at the iPod and see how that product line has evolved to suit different customers. While the iPad is amazing, its almost too much of a hybrid, its large like a laptop – yet lacks in functionality – but it is more portable. And while the iPod can do some much, the small screen is a challenge for heavy reading or document production. Therefore a 7in iPad would clearly anchor it as the definitive mobile-do-all device. Perhaps the upcoming smaller iPad version is designed to compete with ebook readers, like the Amazon Kindle. Perhaps it has new functionality that’s best utilized with a smaller design. Perhaps…well, if there’s one thing we know, whatever Apple comes up with, it will lead the market into an entirely new direction, and at this point, that’s the only thing we can be sure of!

I think this is possible. But they should ass numerous improvements toward it. Ex. Camera (2), Microphone, etc…

As with so many patents, what Apple will actually do with the tech is anyone’s guess! :)
