3D Coloring Book for Kids: Pets [rating: 2.5/5]
The iPad is a great tool for those artistic amongst us and it’s especially good for children who appear to have a natural understanding of the touch controls that the iPad offers.
The latest app to appeal to that specific user base is ‘3D Coloring Book for Kids: Pets’ which offers 10 large 3D cartoon pet animals to color by simply selecting a color from the color palette and then touching the picture to set that color.
The whole app is bright and colorful easy to navigate, even for the smallest of fingers. Although it would help if some of the icon’s included labels so that you could tell what action they do without having to press them and on some pages icons that aren’t relevant still appear and subsequently don’t work.
To begin you’ll need to scroll through the 10 pictures to select the one you want to color. From there it’s as simple as touching the color from the color palette and then touch the area of the picture you wish to color. There’s even an undo button should you make a mistake or you can just apply a different color instead.
Because the pictures are 3 dimensional you can also rotate the picture via the buttons in the top left and right of the screen or by dragging your finger across the picture. This allows you to make sure the whole picture is colored and allows you to pose your pet for when you add it to the its background.
Each pet has it’s own background that you can add it to and at this point you can add a limited selection of items such as a butterfly, cloud, moon or stat. Some of these are animated but none of them can be re-sized or rotated and so feel and look a little out of place on some of the backgrounds.
These completed pictures can then be saved but only within the app, they can’t be saved to your Picture Roll or be emailed to anyone so the use is relatively limited.
The app is nice enough but still a little rough around the edges, it will keep the targeted child market for a while but I fear that with the limited number of pets and sharing options the interest will lapse pretty quickly.
